Make something for yourself!

20130513-204102.jpg

Anyone who makes things for other people (whether paid or unpaid) will understand how your own projects very often get placed at the bottom of the bottomless to do list. That sacred, untouchable part of the list that just gets added to the next list ad infinitum. So this weekend I decided to challenge myself to make my OWN cushions for MY couch. Revolutionary!

Result – I did it! So glad that I took the time to do this for me. It’s all part of finding that perfect balance.

Now… Back to making cushions for other folks!

Yours, cloudishly

To market!

Markets

As you can see, my goals stated in the previous post are going pretty swell! I’ll hold my first Cumulus Factory market stall at the Bondi Markets on Sunday, 24th March. I’m pretty excited to see what happens!

Last time I held a market stall, it was 1994-ish. My best friend Kira and I sold quilled cards (excellent quilling example here … N.B. ours wasn’t quite this awesome). We made a profit around $8 each to my memory. That was because Kira’s mum footed the bill for the stall. Thanks Kim!

If you have ANY tips whatsover for holding markets, please let me know!

A little note about goals

I’m a speech pathologist by day. We were taught to make SMART goals for our clients. It’s not a ground breaking concept, but it does help me focus.

SMART stands for:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic (or Relevant)
Time-bound

smart goal setting concept

I’ve started to develop a few SMART goals around my Cumulus Factory endeavors. Here is what I’m shooting for right now:

• Have an equal number of instagram followers to the number I follow by the end of Sunday 10th March
• Make 5 cushions per week during March
• Make 5 tote bags per week during March
• Hold my first market stall before March is up
• Apply for Finders Keepers markets in December 2013

This weekend’s quota of 5 cushions. They still need to be stuffed.

How do you stay accountable to yourself? What goals are you currently working towards for your small business?

More pineapples, a new toy and a starry bag!

I’ve been a bit quiet on the blogging front but I’ve been VERY busy making things!

I was gifted an amazing Janome Overlocker for my birthday…

Happy cloudiness friends!

Cumulus Brights and addiction to palettes!

These COLOURlovers patterns represent the next 4 clouds I’ll be sewing. Front and back – Grey. Side panels, Brights. I did a dodgy photoshop mockup which you can see on my Etsy store (click the photo for a link).

So here’s the goal:

Before January is up, there’ll be at least 1 of each Bright Cloud Cushion for sale and MADE, to hug and to hold.

Now that my mission is stated – I’d better keep my word!

Cumulus Brights

Now I want to hear from you…

Patterns, pineapples and a couch

It’s been a little while. Hi there! I’ve been keeping very busy doing a few too many different projects as usual. Here’s the summary!

☁ 5 Cloud cushions have now sold. 3 reside in Sydney, 1 is in the UK and 1 is on its way to Norway. International take-over has begun!

Image

This one lives in Cambridge, UK (where playing tennis in the streets is outlawed, according to A Reliable Source on The Internet)

The twin of the Cambridge Cloud Cushion lives in Sydney

This Vintage Cloud Cushion belongs to Lala, and also hangs out in Sydney. Its twin is heading to Norway as we speak.

☁ I’ve started sewing 1 of 5 covers for the foam cushions that will make up our Pallet Couch. This has been ongoing for 6 months, and finally the end is in sight! Turning 12.5 metres of fabric into cushion covers is a LOT more time intensive than I’d imagined. I’ll be posting a how-to tutorial when I’ve completed the first cover.

☁ I’ve been playing a lot with Gel Medium transfer – A technique that is way too easy and way too effective, and has me scratching my head as to WHY I didn’t know about it earlier! There are a few tutorials out there, and it seems there are a few ways to transfer images. Essentially – Anything printed/copied on a laser printer can be transferred to fabric using only gel medium, time, and patience. Too awesome.

☁ On the note of gel medium transfers – I’m in the middle of making a canvas bag for myself which will be the prototype for Cumulus Factory canvas bags. Again, photos to come! Possibly a tutorial as well!

☁ I’ve been playing with COLOURlovers and am completely in love. I’ve got loads of ideas and plans for these patterns… How cool are the pineapples!?!?Image

If you’re on COLOURlovers, let me know! I’m ‘adinabean’. I’d love to have more people to follow and share inspiration with!

Thats all for now! Stay cloudy, but not too cloudy
